Mark played several sports growing up as a kid, (Baseball, Football, Basketball and Tennis), but decided his sophomore year in high school to focus on his tennis career. He was able to achieve a state ranking of 6th by the end of his senior year. Mark then decided to attend the University of Oklahoma and contacted the legendary coach Jerry Keen (who coached 12 Big 8 conference team champions and 83 individual champions as the Sooners head coach from 1964 to 1987). Keen said he had already given out all the scholarships for the year, but Mark could play in a tournament in hopes of making the team as a "walk on". Mark reached the final of the tournament and achieved that goal, but his year was cut short due to an ankle injury. Mark still plays today and follows the ATP and WTA tours. Mark has also taught tennis part time at his local country club.
